Monday Motivation—Letting Go

Happy Monday! I hope your week gets off to a great start. I have an extra-special treat planned for myself today. I’m getting my hair cut!

If that sounds like a mundane thing to celebrate, well…I guess it kind of is. But I hate getting my hair cut (or rather, there are so many other things I’d rather do with my time), so by the time I finally go in, I’m usually really looking forward to it.

An old picture, but it’s actually a bit longer than this at the moment.

This time is no exception. My hair is long enough that ponytails are giving me headaches, and when I leave it down, it gets in the way and distracts me. It happens every time I let my hair grow out, so I have to ask myself, why do I keep doing this? Aside from the hassle of haircuts, what is really holding me back?

I keep letting my hair grow out because I like the look of it long. And honestly, there’s a part of me that’s still holding on to the idea of who I thought I would be and what I would look like as an adult. The dream was always a romance novelist with flowing hair.

Now that I’m living the reality, I have to let go of that image I held as a child (I also imagined myself walking down dark hallways carrying candelabra and wearing a flowing white nightgown, so…yeah, there’s that 😆).

In the end, I’d rather be the prolific writer than look the part that I’d envisioned as a child. I need that energy for writing or plotting out stories instead of it being being drained away with “Ugh, what is tickling my face? Why is my neck so hot?” (I’ve been told “The Princess and the Pea” has nothing on me 😅).

So, today’s Monday Motivation for me is about letting go and getting ready to reclaim that energy and put it to better use.

How about you? Do you have anything special (or celebration-worthy mundane) planned for the start of your week? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
