Pets in Space® 5—Scifi With A Touch of Paranormal

I’ve had lots of fun writing a werewolf on a hoverbike in my Scifi/Paranormal/Urban Fantasy Romance mashup Blades of Janus series. I decided to spread that fun around by adding a bit of the paranormal to The Department of Homeworld Security. For my story in the Pets in Space® 5 anthology, Rate of Return, I decided to explore a new group of sentients—space werewolves!

Happy Birthday(s)!

Happy Birthday, Dexter and Porter! And… a lot of other characters 😅

To celebrate, I’m including an excerpt from Pack below the bump. I’ll also give you the list of all the characters who celebrate a birthday today in the Sci-fi, Urban Fantasy, Paranormal, “Horroromance” world of The Blades of Janus (it’s LONG!).

One of my favorite characters in my worlds is also pretty much the hardest to talk about. His existence is a big reveal for Pack. I know that book has been out for a long time, but I keep thinking of readers who are new to the series. Just in case that’s you and you don’t like spoilers…

Where did the character go to school? Did they have lots of friends? Or were they more of a bookworm than a social butterfly? Do they have siblings? A close-knit family? Did they have pets?

There are so many details that writers can think about in creating a character’s past. Continue reading “A Past Beyond the Page”

Writing Sympathetic Characters

Part of my plan for 2019 is to write a series of blog posts that pull back the curtain on some of my thoughts and methods for writing. So many readers I talk to are curious about what goes on behind the scenes in the creation of their favorite books. I’ve also been approached by writers looking for different ideas for their craft. I hope sharing my process is illuminating for readers and writers alike!

This month, I’m going to focus on the foundation of most narratives—the characters. Continue reading “Writing Sympathetic Characters”

Villainy and Proximity

The second Forbidden Knights book is half-finished, and I have this nagging feeling that it needs a different villain. That’s not a revelation you want to have halfway through a novel (though it’s better than having it when you’re at the end, I suppose 😉 ).

I thought at first that I was just feeling a new form of self-doubt. No matter how I try to ignore it, though, the thought keeps coming back. At a certain point, I realize I need to pause and step back and ask myself, “Am I just too close to this to see it clearly?”
